In Jackson, Michigan, US, Consumers Energy have had problems controlling the tension forces in the messenger wire which serves as protection from lightning to the entire aerial spacer cable system. The system allows for reductions in requirements for tree trimming and major pruning, as it allows trees to grow closer than a bare wire system.  The importance of being able to accurately measure tension in the messenger wire is vital, especially in regards to climatic changes that cause traction and contraction in the wire.  A wire that is not tensioned correctly could fatigue and damage the spacer cable system.
